The FIRE number = annual expenses ÷ withdrawal rate. At the classic 4% rate, you need 25× your annual spending. Based on the Trinity Study (1998), which analyzed 30-year retirement periods using historical U.S. market data. For retirements longer than 30 years, consider using 3–3.5%.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the FIRE movement?
FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) is a movement focused on extreme savings and investment to achieve financial independence well before traditional retirement age. Adherents typically save 50–70% of income and live off investment returns.
What is the 4% rule?
The 4% rule (from the Trinity Study) states that you can withdraw 4% of your portfolio annually, adjusted for inflation, with a high probability of not running out of money over 30 years. Your FIRE number is annual expenses ÷ 0.04.
Is the 4% rule still valid today?
The 4% rule was derived from historical U.S. market data. For longer retirements (40+ years), many FIRE planners use 3–3.5% withdrawal rates to be more conservative. The rule is a guideline, not a guarantee.
What types of FIRE are there?
LeanFIRE: retire on minimal expenses (under $40K/year). Regular FIRE: typical middle-class expenses. FatFIRE: higher spending flexibility. BaristaFIRE: semi-retire with part-time work covering some expenses.
